The annual trip to canterbury is always going to be a tough one you never know who is going to turn up for he oppo. Fresh off the back of 3 consecutive wins boe were confident (despite the wind/cold/gales/hurricanes/snow/4 horse men) that 3 points would be coming back down the M2 with us.
Skipper Thorogood lost the toss but Canterbury generously gave us the push back. The early exchanges in biterly cold weather meant BOE were slow to start and went 1 nil down after 10 minutes. It's important to note at this point we pushed back at 3pm Canterbury had no floodlights due to technical difficulties so it was a race to finish the game in the alotted 30 minute halves. So when BOE went 2 down we were right up against it with the clock ticking.
Surely BOE had to wake up and start playing some decent hockey. As the umpires became more influencial BOE won themselves a corner which was neatly dispatched with a deflection by Archie. 2-1 half time.
An instant turn around benefitted BOE with canterburys legs failing and some wild tackles chopping down the quick youngsters. The pressure and intensity was kept high with BOE winning turnovers again and again in the oppo half and were rewarded with an equaliser of exceptional class by Ed Bull on his reverse launching the ball into the back of the net.
2-2 and with night drawing in chances were plentiful. One such chance fell prem 'one direction' marwaha as he decided to unleash an equally exceptional reverse strike but for far different reason. Cows ran for cover, pick that out the field.
There was still time for a winner and as BOE won a shortcorner Canterbury suddenly decided in that moment it was too dark to play on and before BOE could set for the shortcorner lauched an advertising campaign on local raido for the game to be halted and the draw to be the final result. Despite BOE's protest that the shortcorner should at least be played out the celebrity endorsements and branded bumper stickers canterbury had pre-prepared swayed the umpires.
All in all a Shakespeare farce with a calamitous beginning which could have seen us 4 or 5 down at which point we would have taken a draw but we know on a different day without the need for nightvision googles the result would have been very different.
