A confident performance breathes life back into the 2nd XIs promotion ambitions

After losing the last 2 games in a row and falling off the pace somewhat, the 2nd XI simply had to win against Herne Bay. But with a strong 14-man squad and a clear game plan, confidence was running high; and once the game started, it showed.

Blackheath played with a swagger they have often lacked this season, with attacking midfielders Sam Little, Nick Charlish and Ben Hegarty finding space to cause problems for the Herne Bay defence. The away team were penned back inside their 25 for long periods of the first half, but managed a create a couple of chances on the break. However, Nathan Bullens calmly dealt with everything thrown his way, and the score remained level.

Soon however, Blackheath would find a breakthrough. Jade Bloomfield's short corner was closed down, and after a scramble in the D, Tristan Lacon-Allin fired home from close range. 1-0, and the home side were dominant. Fergus Cadmur and Gabe Downer were able to venture forward from fullback, whilst Robert Hughes and Chris Fowler were solid down the middle of the park, breaking up play and sending Blackheath forward time after time.

As the half time whistle sounded, the 2s walked off in high spirits.

The next 35 minutes saw much of the same. Freddie Meier moved to centre back allowing Downer to be more creative in midfield, and soon forwards Bloomfield and Edd Thorogood were receiving the ball high up the pitch. Oli Ivens and Hegarty were then afforded huge amounts of space and won a flurry of short corners with their pace and trickery. The Herne Bay defence held strong however, and some frustration began to creep in for the home side.

Step forward returning Captain Prem Marwaha. A swift passing move started by Fowler gave Charlish the ball on the opposition 25, he turned his man before firing the ball into the top of the D where Marwaha was waiting to effortlessly deflect the ball past the keeper. 2-0, and the crowd went wild!

Herne Bay looked beaten, and in the final 10 minutes the only disappointment was that Blackheath were unable to find a third.

Final score:

Blackheath 2nd XI 2-0 Herne Bay 1st XI

MOTM: Fergus- solid return to the 2s, and showed great skill and determination in beating TLA for the crown.

DOTD: Prem- attempted to emulate his first goal and failed miserably.
