A dogged performance at the meadow leaves the 2s sitting pretty at the top of the table.

Right. As I'm sure you're all aware by now I have very mixed feelings about having to write these (mostly negative), and many readers have very clear feelings about reading them (again, mostly negative). However, after some quiet meditation and reflection on Saturday night, I believe a mutually fulfilling compromise can be achieved. Rather than merely having brief bullet-point notes describing goals, I will instead have brief bullet-point notes describing all major incidents in the game. Hopefully this will give as much of a description of the game as possible, whilst upholding my principle of not feeling obliged to mention every player by name.

And so...

0-0: Nathan pulls off a string of fine saves, but inevitably lets one in, the score only remaining level as it's still the warm up.

0-0: Robbie Hughes loses the toss. First blood to Old Bords.

0-0: The game begins.

1-0: Mike Lawrence dances round a couple of defenders and unleashes a powerful reverse stick strike into the bottom corner.

1-1: A defensive scramble sees Old Bords equalise from close range- probably deserved at this point.

1-1: Prem stops the ball for the first and last time in the game, feeds the ball to Edd, who in turn squares it to Joe Allen, who then SCOR-- he's put it wide.

2-1: Edd shows Joe how it should be done and fires a rocket into the bottom corner to re-take the lead.

2-1: A drag flick from Mike is inexplicably saved by the Old Bords keeper, pretty sure he was trying to get out the way of it...

HALF TIME: a dressing down from Jade is deserved, despite the scoreline it's not been our best 35 mins of hockey by any means.

3-1: The Welsh Pirlo makes amends for his earlier Miss and fires in from just inside the D. Relief, and a 2-goal cushion.

3-2: Controversy!! Nathan comes off his line and appears to win the ball cleanly in a 50/50 challenge, but a flick is awarded. Far be it from me to disagree with a match official- awful challenge from Nathan. The resulting penalty is converted, setting up a tense finale.

4-2: Mike restores Heath's 2-goal cushion, finally converting a short corner after a combined 37 attempts over the last 4 games. Surely there isn't time for any more drama....

No, there isn't. Final score:

Blackheath & Elthamians 2s 4-2 Old Bordenians 2s

MOTM: Cal- tireless work throughout and never stepped off the pace during his pint race with Fergus

DOTD: Prem- Joe Allen eventually scored, so there was no other option
