After a valiant win over Gore Court last week the mighty 3's hosted a strong Tunbridge Wells side who are also looking to cement their position in this highly contested league. Morale was high, and we had another debut from one of EC's finest players, Nico!
The first half was like a game of ping pong with various crash balls and deflections going wide by both sides who were both not able to convert in the D. After a quick and informative half time team talk by returning captain Ram Basra saw this enthusiastic side give away two very cheap goals with poor defending by the team as a whole. However, the team was not discouraged and saw quickly to respond to the resurgence by the Tunbridge wells side and gain a penalty flick after a premature whistle saw the ball crash into the back of the net and deny our leading goalscorer Nick Surry another superb goal. Nevertheless, Nick confidently stepped up to take the flick and despite his rigour and form he was denied by both posts and the ball trickled away from goal. The score remained 0-2.
This only gave the team a further spark, and what can only be described as a Blackheaths version of "storm Doris" battered down on the Tunbridge goal. Lots of chances created, lots of effort, lots of rigour and powerful play, it was relentless. Eventually a short corner was batted in by Dan Moore after a delicate reverse sweep chip over the keeper at a broken down short corner by Ram Basra and a second was scored in quick succession after some trickery at the top of the opponent’s D saw the ball fall to debutant Nico who made it 2-2.
With ten minutes to go BOE where pushing for the win and after many 3-2 losses throughout the season Ram calmed the team to ensure that this didn’t occur again. Great runs from Toby Baldwin and Henry Baines on the flanks continued the pressure on a straining Wells backline, but the elusive 3rd goal was not to be found. A momentary lapse in judgement saw Rikesh try to clear the ball from the BOE D but miss the ball entirely and give the Tunbridge Wells side a short corner with minutes to spare. Luckily, the ball was cleared and the final whistle blew.
2-2 the final score and a good result against a team we lost 6 - 1 to previously shows the progression made in the second half of the season. We have two games left to look to cement the side in the top half of the table.
MOTM: Seb, for another outstanding display in goal and keeping us in the game during the first half.
DOTD: Rikesh for the short corner with minutes to spare. (Rikesh does feel hard done by as he feels Dom Lester was owned by his striker for 70 minutes)
