A disappointing 1-1 result at Blackheath High against Old Bordenians, but the truth is they were a tough opposition last time we played them (when they were 1-0 up for most of the match and we were lucky to score 2 goals in the last ten minutes).
But that’s not the way match started... after about a minute (or less) Chris Hall ran down the ground, passed and another of our players (sorry I forgot) ran it down to the base line, crossed to Charlie standing unmarked in front of the goal, with the keeper standing off to the right post and the ball was straight in. A giveaway goal if there ever was one and it seemed that the match was heading for 20-0.
Perhaps that early goal led Old B’s to be ultra-defensive, because that’s the way they played for the remainder of the game with all but one or two of their players inside the 25. They grabbed a goal late in the second half after a defensive lapse from us.
It wasn’t always clear if the opposition was playing rugby or hockey, and it made for a difficult one to umpire. Thanks to Martin Harris for a sterling effort. Captain and VC’s pick for man of the match went to Jonathan Coleman, for a determined, skilled and proper effort at left back.
The team has a week off next week (anyone for tennis?) before Gravesham at home, and then the potential league decider against Gore Court.
