A FIREWORKS DAY CRACKER OF A MATCH

*A FIREWORKS DAY CRACKER OF A MATCH*

Before the match started with a perfectly observed minute silence as a mark of respect following the tragic death of a young Canterbury player.

It was a wet and rainy day and the watching supporter cast an envious eye to those in the bar as the game started.

The match started slowly and the most noticeable event in the first 5 minutes was when Emma passed the ball out of play to a group of seagulls who had moved in, mistaking the sodden pitch for the English Channel.

But wait, creator extraordinaire, Sue, slipped the ball wonderfully with a no look pass to Emma for a tap in. 1-0 up, 7 mins in. The dynamic duo celebrated with their teammates.

Ashford came straight back on the attack, pegging Blackheath’s back 3 for next 5 minutes but the defensive trio of Ella, Banksie and Stan held firm with the central midfield duo of Sally and Jilly shielding them well.

With Jules demonstrably willing his team forward and not to sit so deep, Blackheath started to push on and keep the play deep into the Ashford half.

With the wing play of Sarah and Vicky providing width and penetration time and again, another goal for Blackheath would surely follow.

With half an hour gone, the strength of the Blackheath players meant goalkeeper Sarah had yet to touch the ball.

Short corners for Blackheath continued to mount but to no avail with one going over the fence to surprise a second group of seagulls.

Ashford finally started to push hard in the last 5 mins forcing Blackheath to defend resolutely as half time beckoned.

Jules reluctantly subbed Sue with a min to go to waste some time but damn it - an equaliser followed! The whistle blew for half time immediately after.

Ashford seemed to have the edge at the beginning of the second half. However gradually Blackheath started to get a foothold back in the game with Sally continuing to collect and move the ball across the midfield and provide that all important shield for the defence.

7 mins into the second half and Emma passed the ball across the goal mouth for Vicki to slot in from the far left. Blackheath take the lead once again.

Blackheath did not rest on their laurels with Carlotta, Vicki and Jilly combining well in attack. Finally the pressure paid off when Vicky scored with a low drive from the middle.

3-1 with 20 minutes to go. Surely the game is over now. However, there was more drama to come with Carlotta receiving a card and making herself a dead cert for DOD.

The rain was unrelenting but was having no affect on Blackheath who continued to look for a fourth goal. However, Ashford were awarded their first short corner of the match and scored to make it 3-2. The game was back on.

Blackheath pushed forward and had numerous chances in the D but just couldn’t find the back of the net. There was a strong feeling that Blackheath needed another goal to secure the win and the away travelling fan had started to get anxious.

Blackheath’s continued pressure meant Carlotta finally got her deserved goal with a strong shot into the bottom right corner to make it 4-2. Victory was secured and the travelling crowd got to its foot.

The team were strong and focused in defence and fast on the attack with whole team moving up and down the pitch as one.

DOD - Carlotta

MOM - Vicki
