A crumbling 24 hours on the Friday before the weekend saw our secure squad of 14 fall to the bear 11. However as Banksy & Sian handed over all 5 children to daddy daycare, "Has this one had a nap? Has this one had their snack?" there was optimism in the air - & rightly so.
Starting positively Blackheath linked together some great play & were dominating the game well. Emma went for one of her mazy runs & near the top of the D it looked like an episode of Total WipeOut - carpet astro burn for the knees right there! But the umpires hadn't gone to Specsavers so whilst Blackheath were in dismay at no foul given, the oppo had broken & were hurtling towards Blackheaths goal. Sarah smelt blood & relished her chance to Maddie Hinch style the unsuspecting forward, a terrific slide at the top of the D, catching the ball (& maybe a leg... or two) Blackheath cleared the threat & re-grouped.
Blackheath continued domination, soon earning another short corner, although it was cleared to as far as Vicky P who harboured her own ideas - a little tip tap here & a zig zag there, she then pulled out a cracking reverse strike shot which could not be stopped by the Ashford keeper. 1-0 up to the home team.
Then it went all abit wobbly. Vicki B was innocently struck down with a totally unprovoked ball to the face. There was blood, tears, snot & saliva - Jillys day job. After some 5 star on pitch trauma care, the final 4 minutes of the half were played out. Jules compassionate as ever, was keen to get the half time talk underway. Down to 10 players... but only for a few seconds as Wanni runs over from a huddle of spectators, keen to test out The Groin, back up to 11, wahoo!
The 2nd half saw Blackheath become more compact as we changed to a half court press to protect our lead. 5 star Doctor Jilly showed her other, not so gentle side - her strength was too great as her oppo cried out "stop pushing me" as the umpire called them in to have a quiet word.
From there on, Blackheath dug deep, some tired legs as expected but we kept our composure & were rewarded with the 3 points.
POTM - Freya for her impact as right forward
DOTD - Jilly for not knowing her own strength
