Blackheath started the match strongly keeping possession and forcing Ashford inside their half as we tried to apply pressure. Unable to break through their defence, especially on the right side of the pitch, we made use of transfers in defence to distribute the ball successfully down the left. This opened up space in the D and Flick was able to send a good ball in but no one was able to get a touch on the end.
Shortly after, Blackheath won a short corner but the straight strike from Annie was saved. Blackheath continued to create opportunities and came very close as Laura’s touch just went wide of the post narrowly preventing us from scoring.
At the end of the first half Ashford broke away resulting in them winning a short corner but Blackheath’s defence were strong and this was cleared leaving us 0-0 at half time.
The second half began and Ashford stepped up, putting some pressure on our defence but some good tackles from Sally in particular allowed us to turnover and push forward again.
A short corner was won, and a strong slap onto the back post from Alex was ultimately converted after a scramble. But the umpire had just blown the whistle for another PC so the goal did not count.
The umpires were keen to card and Blackheath had 2 greens to Vicky & Marnie and Alice received a yellow after both her and an Ashford player were on the ground. This also meant Ashford received a short corner which they were sadly able to score from.
Blackheath worked hard to desperately try and equalise but unfortunately struggled and so the match ended 1-0 to Ashford. Another loss where the score line did not reflect Blackheath’s promising performance.
Final score:
Blackheath & Elthamians 0-1 Ashford
