A short novel for your Saturday evening…???
BEHC Women’s 1s vs Brom Becks
Final score: BEHC 2, Brom Becks 1
As witnessed from above, by a bird with excellent timing
I arrived early. Perched perfectly, surveying the turf, the sticks, the nervous energy. Below me stood BEHC Women’s 1s, huddled tightly for their team talk. Focused. Determined. Vulnerable. One human in particular, Laura, positioned directly beneath my chosen branch. Fate does the rest.
Release.
Direct hit. Devastating accuracy. Textbook execution. Warm up interrupted, team talk immortalised. You’re welcome.
Once my work was complete, I settled in to watch the hockey.
From the opening whistle, BEHC flew. Transfers zipped around like startled insects. They came out firing, wings fully spread, and Brom Becks looked a step behind. The first goal was chaos done beautifully. Nicole darted to the baseline and sent a ball screaming across goal. It smacked an inside back, popped kindly, and Alice swooped in to finish. Predatory instincts. I approve.
Not long after, Alice struck again. A reverse sweep slid into the bottom corner, clean and precise. Two nil. The humans below celebrated, unaware that I nodded approvingly from my branch.
The second half brought turbulence. Brom Becks clawed one back and then began launching short corners as if trying to take flight themselves. One after another. A million, by my count. Kyveli, the last line of defence, refused to be rattled, barking instructions and swatting danger away with impressive authority.
Discipline wobbled. Vicky earned a green card for accidentally flooring someone. Sally followed with a stick tackle. Laura, still spiritually marked by my earlier contribution, completed the trio. BEHC down to nine players. Excellent drama. Strong narrative arc.
Despite the pressure, BEHC held firm. Annie tackled relentlessly at right back. Alice continued to scrap for everything. Kyveli guarded the goal like a hawk protecting its nest. The final whistle blew. Two one. Job done.
Player of the Match was shared among Alice, Annie and Kyveli. Fair choices. Skilled, tenacious, composed.
As for Dick of the Day, it remains Laura. Not for the card, but because my pre match intervention set the tone for the entire afternoon.
I stretched my wings, satisfied. A win for BEHC, a memorable team talk, and another flawless performance from above ??
