There was a quiet confidence in the Ladies 1s following a well earned win last week and keen to get another 3 points, the team got on the pitch early to warm up in the sunshine. However with a couple of players "stuck in traffic" the warm up didn't quite hit the spot and nerves were creeping in as the push back was made.
Despite the changes to the team from the previous week (namely the captain missing!) the ladies settled nicely into the game and were comfortably in control for the first half with a strong central setup in Jilly, Vicky & Sally and some fantastic runs through the middle from Rachael. With lots of possession and pressure a number of short corners were won but BOEHC failed to convert them.
Quick breaks from R&I tested BOEHC but good defensive work from Ceri, Amanda and Karen kept them out of the D.
Short, sharp passes from BOEHC finally broke the deadlock after some super saves from the Redbridge keeper with Emma slotting it away. Another goal swiftly followed again from Emma but was disallowed after a brief umpire discussion about boobs and a short corner awarded. Unfortunately Sally was unable to tap it in from the post after Rachael struck the ball marginally wide.
Lack of sweets at half term meant no sugar rush in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Caught off guard after another failed BOEHC short corner attempt, R&I attacked down the right hand side. A tackle, which resulted in the R&I player booting the ball down the line and R&I cut into the d to bring the score to 1-1.
A shakey 10 minutes ensued with more and more decisions going against BOEHC but the ladies soon composed themselves and took back control of the game. R&I were put under constant pressure but defended well with the keeper making many good saves.
The final whistle brought the end to a frustrating game for BOEHC who for once were wearing matching socks. Blackheath Bear had no words that could make the team feel better and getting lost going 0.5 miles between the pitch and the club house for teas was the final straw for Lucy. However sausage & chips put a smile back on everyone's face as they thought about the prospect of Monday night's short corner training...
