Blackheath giving up losing for Lent: 2-2

It was a grey and bleak wintry afternoon, the weather similar to Blackheath's recent form. The opposition were Ashford, a team that they have had reasonable success against in recent times. Captain Jen did her best to motivate the team with some inspirational words on whatsapp. Two of the squad were conspicuous by their absence, supposedly getting the start time wrong, but more likely sleeping off last night's hangover or whipping up a quick batch of homemade pasta.

Blackeath started strongly, passing the ball around well and applying plenty of pressure in Ashford's area. This was rewarded with an early penalty corner. Putting their extensive Monday night corner training into practice, Amanda stepped up and smashed in a straight strike. 100% conversion rate from corners in the game (so far).

Blackheath continued to dominate and could and should have been several goals ahead. Amanda ran past several defenders and as the keeper came out to meet her at the top of the D she slipped the ball Emma, who directed it wide of the empty goal.  As it was, Ashford managed to equalise, goalkeeper Sarah making several great saves before one too many chances allowed Ashford to get it over the line.

After a positive, jelly baby fuelled team talk, Blackheath reverted to their usual second half switch off and conceded another goal to go 2-1 down.

Ashford moved up a gear and looked dangerous, a further goal could have put the game beyond reach. Vicky took one for the team, earning a green card for her dogged defending.

Towards the end of the game, Blackheath were awarded yet another short. This time Kathryn was in line for the shot. She pulled off a carefully pre planned miss hit. More used to seeing the ball go wide, or missing it completely, Emma was somewhat surprised, and then elated, to hear the ball bounce off her stick and hit the backboard. 2-2 and all to play for.

With minutes left on the clock, Blackheath threw everything into the game, literally on their knees at times, with Karen aiming an inch perfect cross for Sue on the left post. Unfortunately Sue was on the sub's bench at the time.

It wasn't to be and with the score ending even, Blackheath earned a vital point. This leaves them three points off the bottom having played two games more than some of the teams around them, and promising an exciting end to the season.
