The Magic Sand That Turned To Water

The Magic Sand That Turned To Water

Jenny Seale7 Mar 2017 - 18:55

Final score 2 - 3

The sun was shinning and Blackheath ladies were ready to take on 5th in the table Canterbury, the only thing missing was sand on the pitch...until the water cannons came on (DOD to Kate for the sand comment)!

The match started well for Blackheath against a young spritely Canterbury side, quick accurate passes, sharp reactions and good pace won Blackheath a number of interceptions up the middle of the pitch which then translated in to the first short corner of the match. Within the first few minutes Jilly scored her first short corner goal of the season from the top of the D to put Blackheath on the scoreboard first!

Adjusting to the water based pitch meant that a few mistakes crept in for Blackheath. But the first half remained competitive with Blackheath working hard in all areas of the pitch. Sarah in goal made some excellent saves, she was faced with a number of rebounds which were batted away well, this excellent play remained throughout and earned Sarah MOM!

Short corners were a big feature of the first half for both teams, with Blackheath (particularly Captain Jen taking not one, not two, but about 10 for the defensive team...bruises that is). Blackheath weren't able to convert any of the remaining short corners in the first half, and a quick break from Canterbury left the score at 1-1 when the whistle blew for half time.

The start of the second half saw Blackheath determined not to settle in to the lull that often occurs at this time in the match. Although Blackheath worked hard and achieved their aim, Canterbury came out equally determined and committed which resulted in one of their players diving to score a goal which put the home side ahead 2-1.

Not content with this scoreline and some missed chances in the first half for both attack and defence, Blackheath battled hard in the both Ds adding some more bruises to the tally and more importantly another goal. The goal came after a few missed shots and rebounds, by which time Jenna thought it was time to get this phase of play decided and smashed the ball in to the back of the goal! 2-2

Blackheath became aware of the time left on the clock and the intensity of the game picked up. Karen's commitment was demonstrated by her ability to play whilst lying on the floor, also exemplary we're her crosses which we're sometimes so good that they were too quick for her teammates to get on the end of.

The final goal of the match sadly came from the home team Canterbury who's youthful energy endured throughout, coupled with a bit of luck, ended the match at 3-2.

It was great to see Blackheath scoring more goals again and some great phases of play all over the pitch to convincingly confirm that the goal drought has ended!

MOM Sarah M-B and DOD Kate!
