Onwards and upwards!

The sun was shining and Blackheath arrived in high spirits ready to kick the new season off with a bang. The first half began and it was clear this was going to be a physical battle.

Roisin and Felicity linked up to take on the experienced defence. Together the midfield and forwards won a series of short corners. Blackheath had the opportunity to demonstrate an array of short corner routines and on another day it would have been goals galore, but the Gillingham Anchorians keeper was unfortunately having a blinder.

Towards the middle of the first half the shape began to waver and Gillingham converted a short corner. Zoe’s dynamic saves kept us in the game. A final attack of the half saw the ball worked up the pitch from Hannah to Beth who put the ball in to Shyla in a fantastic position on the post whose deflection just went wide. A promising final action of the first half.

If there’s one thing the BEHC ladies 2’s team has, it’s fight. Half time came and we knew what we needed to do. We were still in this, we just needed to re-group, find our shape and stretch the pitch.

The second half began and it was all to play for. Jen conducted the press and Hannah sweeped up anything that came through. The defence remained switched on with Alice’s determination, Jess’s pressure and Marianna directing from centre back. Nell and Amelie fired up and down the wing taking on anyone in their path. With Maddy’s driving runs, Laura switching play and Emma stretching the pitch, the BEHC ladies just couldn’t capitalise.

The game ended 0-1 Gillingham, but it was a promising display from the BEHC L2’s. Player of the match was tied between Hannah, Amelie, Beth and Nell. Whilst TFC went to Laura for seeing too many balls for a Saturday afternoon.
