Wobbly start

This week the ladies 2s faced Holcombe.

We had a wobbly start as Holcombe scored an early goal 6mins into play. Despite the early set back, we was optimistic that we would turn it around with positive cheers echoing across the pitch “let’s go girls, heads on! We’ve got this Blackheath!”

The defence fought hard to stop play, tightly marking the attack. Despite multiple shots at goal, Zoe saved every attempt kicking the ball out of the D.

With Blackheath’s quick 16 set up, Jen passed the ball to Jess on the right who then passed to Hannah…With power, Hannah hit a through ball to the other side of the pitch. We thought it was going off but how wrong were we to doubt speedy Shyla who sprinted as fast as she could and collected the ball at the top of the D; she was one on one with the keeper and took a shot at goal, BOSH! Unfortunately, the attempt was saved. Great run Shyla!

As Holcomb played the ball down the left channel, Nell defended hard having her stick flat on the ground, forcing them to play back into their defence. Sue ran back and intercepted the play and started to drive into the D, she took a strike! Ah she narrowly missed the goal…unlucky Sue girl!

During half-time team talk Jen cleverly mentioned that Holcomb was only attacking down the right channel so we made it our mission to play on their weaker side….their left!

We drew the opposition in to our left and quickly switched play down the right - Roisin, Sian and Beth linking together passing the ball between them as they ran further up the pitch…Beth passed the ball to Sue who took a strike at goal which was miraculously SAVED by the goalie!

5mins left on the clock, time was ticking and both sides were giving it their all. Holcomb looking tired constantly asking the umpire how much time was left of play! Blackheath was awarded a long corner which was taken quickly by Sian, Laura called for the ball and received it at the edge of the D, she took a shot which was unfortunately picked up by Holcomb's defender who hit the ball out of play.

Despite Blackheath’s best efforts, the score remained 1-0. Unlucky girls, we fought hard and I was incredibly proud of how well we all played today!

MOM - Nel! Solid defending, timely through balls to the forwards and great attempts at goal. Well deserved Nel, you had a brilliant game!

TFC/DOD - Marianna! Well, it was a pretty long list but to summarise…not finding the exit door out of the changing rooms, for laying on the floor whilst defending in the D and for screaming during halftime team talk because there was a spider on her!
