When 11 became 10…
The sun was shining and the W2’s were off to the seaside at Herne Bay. The team gathered in the changing room where Maddy gave her team talk and went over the latest tactics for the game.
Once on the pitch the whistle blew and the team stepped up with great runs and passes down the right. There were great transfers around the back as the ball was fed to the forwards. Unfortunately with 2 minutes to go before halftime, a ball deflected up and hit Shyla in the head. Marianna and Maddy helped with the first aid as Jenny called the team round to regroup.
The team were down to 10 players and fighting hard. Everyone dug in and the W2 won an attacking short corner. The team went with a left slip out to Marnie who crossed it to Wanni on the post, the ball came out for a rebound and Roisin put the ball away – a well-deserved goal! In the heat, gaps started to show, and unfortunately, Herne Bay won a short corner and scored from a slip and shot down the right post. The W2s won a couple more shorts but unfortunately couldn’t quite score.
The Team were playing sensibly trying not to over-commit whilst still moving the ball forwards. There was lots of communication between the defence and midfield, and lots of running by the forwards. Herne Bay were tiring but in the heat, and with one player down, so were the W2s. Herne Bay started an attack and the W2s were overloaded. A ball was crossed in and one of the Herne Bay forwards managed to find the back of the net.
Disappointingly the final score was a 1 – 2 loss. Individually and as a team the W2s were the stronger side. Hopefully with a full team for the return match the W2s will come away with a win!
