On a mild Saturday BEHC W2’s kicked off against Holcombe with plenty of energy and optimism. The opening exchanges were end-to-end, with Holcombe pressing high, moving the ball quickly and keeping the tempo uncomfortably high. Despite some early resistance, three goals came in quick succession, leaving BEHC 3–0 down in the first half before we’d really had time to settle.
Huge credit to Sarah in goal, who spent much of the first half performing what can only be described as a highlight reel of saves. In front of her, defenders Julie, Jen and Alice worked tirelessly to keep Holcombe at bay for as long as humanly possible, under near-constant pressure.
The second half saw a more positive BEHC performance, with better structure and increased time in the Holcombe half. Forwards Matilda (deserved Player of the Match) and Shyla both created chances, but the Holcombe goalkeeper was in no mood to be generous. Unfortunately, Jemma took a painful hit to the foot and was subbed off, our first injury of the afternoon.
The second injury… came after the final whistle. Holcombe were awarded a short corner, and in a bold display of commitment (or poor decision-making), Maddy bravely put herself on the post. The ball struck her foot, immediately triggering the worst calf cramp known to mankind. What followed was a dramatic collapse to the floor, accompanied by screaming, crying and what can only be described as a very undignified bum-shuffle attempt to escape the pitch.
Sarah heroically held the leg aloft while Julie attempted emergency calf massage. Eventually, after several minutes of chaos, two of the Men’s 1s players warming up and Jenni (Francesca’s mum — MVP off the pitch) carried Maddy to the sideline, foot still raised, dignity fully left behind.
