Blackheath & Elthamians Womens 2s headed to Sevenoaks in typical February weather. The rain was heavy and constant so the playing conditions were very poor. To contribute to the difficulties, we were without a goalkeeper this week and unfortunately this did heavily advantage Sevenoaks.
The first half began and we struggled to find our rhythm letting in 3 goals in the first 15 minutes, 2 came from short corners that were executed well by Sevenoaks and was rather straightforward for them due to the absence of a goalie.
However, as the first half progressed we capitalised on opportunities further up the pitch winning a short corner that led to another short. With an open left post Emma was close to deflecting Gemma’s cross in and play was looking more positive for W2s. Also the defence became stronger, players were tightly marked and we stepped in front to intercept passes quickly allowing us to hold the score line at 3-0 at the break.
The start of the second half continued with the same positive momentum and Jen managed to expertly save some shots on the line. Shyla had a good run up front but unfortunately the cross in was intercepted.
Yet as the rain continued and Blackheath tired with only one sub, we struggled to keep Sevenoaks at bay. They scored multiple goals from shorts and powerful hits on target. A shot to Jen on the line hit her on the knee and did leave her down for a minute but she preserved and played on. Overall the match ended 7-0 and the team did their best in the horrible conditions and lack of goal keeper.
MoM goes to Maddie for excellent defending all round, with strong tackles and some impressive dribbling where she skilled up 3 players! Dod goes to Alice for going to the wrong location and not checking the group chat!
