That a wrap !

Blackheath’s 2s travelled away to Ashford this week for an early start in their final game of the 2025/26 season.

It was a tough opening to the match, with Blackheath going 1–0 down early in the first half. Despite the setback, the team responded well, battling hard and showing some excellent link-up play, with great passing combinations and real strength going forward. Blackheath were disappointed to concede again in the first half, but they kept working tirelessly and were rewarded for their efforts with a well-worked team goal.

The move started in defence, where the ball was played out to Susie, who drove it strongly down the line before finding Maddie. Maddie then picked out Francesca, who finished confidently to find the back of the goal. It was a brilliant passage of play and gave Blackheath a deserved lift. At half-time, the team still felt positive at 3–1 down, believing there was a chance to battle their way back into the game.

The second half saw Blackheath continue to fight hard. Cesca came close, hitting the post, while Ashford added to their lead with a goal from a short corner. Susie continued to put in some sterling attacking efforts, even if she did spend a fair amount of time on the floor along the way!

Defensively, Jess was outstanding throughout. She swept up countless balls in the D, stepped in front to make crucial interceptions, and even cleared shots off the line in a superb defensive display. Unfortunately, despite Blackheath’s determination and effort, Ashford continued to find the net, and the game eventually finished 7–1.

While the scoreline was not the result Blackheath had hoped for, the team worked tirelessly right to the final whistle and showed flashes of some really excellent hockey throughout. There is plenty to take away from the game and lots for the team to be proud of as they look ahead to next season.

A huge well done goes to Jess, who was deservedly named Player of the Match for her exceptional defensive performance.

Meanwhile, Julie picked up Wally of the Match after an unfortunate incident involving the ball rebounding off her foot — and, in her own interests, we’ll leave it at that.

Finally, a special thank you must go to Jenny for all her hard work and commitment in captaining the team this year. It has been a tough season, but there is plenty to build on for next year.
