Battle at the top

It started with an inspirational performance and win from England in the rugby World Cup semi final, who had been the underdogs against New Zealand. Quite fitting we thought as we were the underdogs today against Gore Court who are top of the table.
We limbered up to the cheers of the Men’s 1st team match, ready to face a well drilled opposition but we were lucky to have the support of Tom A on the sideline as our coach this week. Gore Court started strong, with some dangerous short corner routines being defended well. It wasn’t too long before BEHC gained the upper hand with a well delivered early goal from Robyn, assisted by Lucy. Not too long afterwards Gore Court manages to claw one back. Not disheartened, we soldiered on, setting up some great passages of play but Gore Court marked us tightly out of the game. We eventually managed to push through and get the ball into Gore Courts D using fast and short passes between Penny and Robyn whom then passed to Beth who had her eye on the prize and tapped it in to give us a 2-1 lead.
At half time the team talk was positive and we knew we needed to trust our game and keep working hard. So, we then started the second half composed and strong. After a couple of minutes Gore Court scores from the top of the D with a bullet into the roof of the goal, leaving everyone a bit startled. We knew we needed to persevere and ensure we were man to man marking at the appropriate times. Unfortunately Gore Court went on to score again BUT this lit a fire in our bellies we were not going down without a fight. We battled, we pressed, we worked the ball well into the D with drive and conviction where Amanda managed to fire a shot and it deflected off the defenders foot into the goal to level us up once again. For the rest of the game we defended with our bodies on the line and attacked with ferocity but no more goals were to come. We ended with a draw, which felt like a small victory over the team who stand top of the league, still unbeaten and focused on getting back to our winning ways next week. TFC Karen for her card, which was very unfortunate and POM was Zoe for making some insanely gymnastic and powerful saves. Score 3-3; scorers Robyn, Beth, Amanda.
