After climbing to fourth in the league, Blackheath were getting a taste for the top and raring to take on joint top placed Holcombe.
However, the day didn’t start off as planned when firstly defender Kate P called in sick with a migraine, and then Goalie Sandra had to step down due to a vomiting bug. Luckily Louisa Morris kindly agreed to don the kit so the team had someone in goal and allowed us to have some extra legs on the bench for what we knew would be a tough match.
Blackheath had first push back and the game was looking good – Holcombe had some fast legs up front, but nothing that could get past the defence and the game was evenly matched. The first goal of the match came from Blackheath’s Kylie Brackenridge who tapped it in after a disallowed goal from Robyn Mansfield on a short corner. Holcombe we’re not for giving up though and quickly retaliated with their own goal off a short corner to level the score line at 1-1 before half time.
After a pep talk from President Angela, the second half commenced, and the battle continued. Both teams had their share of the ball but were getting tired, and the silky skills off the first half were replaced by a lot of hitting and hoping.
Despite this the third goal of the match came from some great teamwork up front with Blackheath’s Nina Bowles getting it past the goalie to make the score line 2-1 with around 15 minutes to go. Holcombe weren’t for letting a draw out of their sight thought and relentlessly pushed to get into the Blackheath half, and finally got a second to level the score.
The whistle blew at 2-2. Woman of the Match was awarded to Natasha Falzon for her awesome defensive skills, and Donut of the Day went to Captain Cat for her ridiculous self-pass off the edge of the pitch and running into Umpire Alan! Well done to the whole team for a fantastic performance.
